If you’ve ever spent a long day behind the wheel on the Albany Highway, you know that things don’t always go to plan. Maybe the coffee stop in Williams took longer than expected, or you got stuck behind a wide-load header moving between paddocks at 20 kilometres per hour. By the time you reach your destination, the sun is down and you’re worried the reception desk might be locked up tight.
In the city, big hotels have 24-hour lobbies. But out here in regional Western Australia, things are often a bit different.
The Standard Country Handover
Most regional motels and guest houses stick to a strict window, usually between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Because many of these places are family-run, the person checking you in is likely the same person who was folding the laundry two hours ago and will be making the breakfast tomorrow morning.
If you think you’ll be arriving after dark, the “no worries” approach only works if you give the host a heads-up. Most country stays are happy to leave a key in a lockbox or make arranges, but they need to know you’re coming so they don’t mark you as a no-show.

Why Every Hour Counts on the Road
We understand the reality of regional travel. Sometimes you want to get an early start to beat the heat, or you need to drop your bags off at 11:00 am so you can head out to a local event or a farm visit.
At Cornwall House Accommodation, we try to keep things as practical as possible. While we have standard times to make sure our cleaning team can get the rooms spotless, we know that life on the road is rarely standard. If the room is ready and you’re in town early, we’ll do our best to get you settled.
Tips for a Stress-Free Arrival
- Check the booking tech: Modern stays often use systems that allow for more flexibility. You can see our live availability and book directly through our system to see if there are specific notes about late arrivals.
- The Call Ahead Rule: If your GPS says you’re going to be late, a quick five-minute phone call makes a world of difference. It’s much better than turning up to a dark office.
- Watch for Wildlife: This is the biggest reason check-in times get pushed back. Driving at dusk or dawn in the Wheatbelt means kangaroos are a massive risk. We’d much rather you take it slow and arrive safe at 8:00 pm than rush to beat a 6:00 pm “cutoff.”
Setting Your Own Schedule
The best way to get a flexible experience is to skip the third-party booking sites and talk to the owners directly. When you book with us, you’re talking to local people who understand that the road from Perth to the Great Southern can be unpredictable.
We’ve set up our check-in process to be as smooth as possible, whether you’re arriving right on time or a little later than you planned.
